Shopping for curvy petite pants gets frustrating fast when they fit your hips but gap at the waist.

In this episode, Petite Style Coach Angela Foster breaks down why this happens so often for curvy petites, what measurements matter most, which pant styles tend to work best, and how to create outfits that feel balanced and flattering.

Listen to the Episode

This is a listener Q&A episode.

What happens when you’re curvy and petite? Are pants just a pipe dream? And is there any way to get rid of that annoying waist gap in pants?

Absolutely.

You just need to know what to look for.

In this episode, we’re covering the four styles that work best for curvy petites, what to pair those styles with so you create the most flattering outfits, and the brands my private coaching clients with curves have the best luck with.

By the end, you’ll have outfit ideas ready to pull from your closet, or you’ll know exactly what to look for the next time you shop for pants that fit your hips and waist.

I’m Angela, your Petite Style Coach. And when you’re ready, let’s dive in.

Thank you, June, for sending in this question and for letting me share it, because a lot of women run into this exact problem.

Here’s her question:

“What do I need to look for when purchasing dress pants and jeans? If it fits my waist, it’s too baggy in the hips. Or if it fits my hips and thighs, then it’s too loose in the waist. What should I do?”

First of all, why does this happen?

When you have a curvy figure, there’s a bigger difference between your waist and hip measurement. And not all brands take that into account. That’s exactly why so many women struggle to find pants for a small waist and bigger hips.

But once you know what causes the problem, you know there’s a solution.

The Best Rise for Curvy Petite Pants

The second step in SPARK, the Petite Style Method, is pants. And while it’s the second step, pants are often the number one problem for petites.

We’ve had other episodes on the Perfect Petite Pant Formula, but for today, we’re focusing on rise.

This is super important because when you’re a curvy petite, you want the waistband to hit right at your natural waist. Rise is the measurement from the crotch of your pants to the top of the waistband.

When pants hit lower than your natural waist, that often causes the waist gap in the back. And when the rise is too long for your petite frame, that’s also what causes the saggy crotch situation, which is nobody’s idea of a good time.

Don’t get too hung up on whether a brand calls something high rise, mid rise, or classic rise. Every brand labels rise differently.

The most important thing is figuring out your ideal rise.

The easiest way to do that is to take a pair of pants you already own. You don’t have to love everything about them, but they should hit you at the right spot. Then measure them.

Once you know your ideal rise, the next step is to figure out your actual waistline. Stand up and, without moving your legs, bend your torso left and right. Wherever your body creases, that’s your natural waist.

Once you have those two numbers, your ideal rise and your actual waist measurement, compare them to the pants you’re thinking about buying.

How to Find Pants That Fit Hips and Waist

Don’t be surprised when you shop online and can’t find the rise listed.

It may be the least reported measurement in online shopping.

That is slowly getting better, but considering how critical rise is to comfort and fit, you’d think more retailers would make it easy to find.

So here’s the move: use the chat feature and ask.

Seriously.

When brands don’t share the rise, ask for it. The more shoppers ask, the more likely brands are to start listing the measurements that actually matter.

Best Pants for Curvy Petites

Now let’s talk about the styles that work best for curvy petite women. There are four in particular.

Wide-Leg Pants for Curvy Petites

We talk about wide-leg pants a lot, and in this case they’re a brilliant choice.

Why?

Because they’re fitted at the waist through the hip and then fall straight down. That makes them one of the best options for curvy fit trousers and curvy petite dress pants.

Barrel-Leg Pants

Barrel-leg pants are another great option because they mimic a curvier shape: narrower at the waist and roomier through the hip.

Balloon Pants

Balloon pants also work beautifully because the shape looks intentional. The extra volume through the hip and thigh doesn’t look like bad fit. It looks like the design.

Joggers for Curvy Petites

Joggers are another strong choice, especially because they’re often narrower at the hem, which helps petites avoid extra tailoring.

And before you write these off as denim-only styles, not anymore.

Over the last few seasons, there have been plenty of dressier versions, which means you can absolutely find office-friendly options in these shapes.

Best Fabrics for Curvy Fit Pants

There are a couple more things to look for when shopping for curvy fit jeans or trousers.

First, look for some stretch.

Stretch is a blessing. It helps the pants stay comfortable while still hugging the waist.

Second, look for lighter-weight fabrics with movement, like ponte, jersey, or linen.

When fabric is thick, rigid, and has no give, it often feels overwhelming on a petite frame. A wide-leg or fuller-cut pant in a heavy fabric can hide your shape instead of flattering it.

What to Wear With Curvy Petite Pants

So now you’ve found an amazing pair of pants that fits in the waist and is intentionally roomier in the hip and thigh area.

What do you wear with them?

That depends on your body shape.

For Signature Body Shapes 3 and 4, when you add volume on the bottom, you want less volume on top. Pair your pants with more tailored tops, sweaters, blouses, or softer, less structured blazers.

And if you’re new here and don’t know your Signature Body Shape yet, hop over to the Petite Body Shape Quiz. Knowing which silhouettes flatter your shape best is the first step toward making getting dressed faster and easier.

And around here, you are not an apple, a pear, or anything else in a fruit salad.

For Signature Body Shape 6, the goal is to add a little volume on top to balance a fuller bottom half. So pair these pants with cropped sweaters, structured blazers, cotton button-downs, or blouses with collar or shoulder detail.

The Frankie Shop is especially strong for barrel and balloon styles.

Their stretch denim is comfortable and especially flattering for curves.

How to Fix a Waist Gap in Pants You Already Own

Now let’s talk about what to do with pants that are already in your closet.

Option 1: Tailoring

A good tailor can often improve the fit by adjusting the yoke or adding darts.

Option 2: Temporary Waist Gap Fixes

Hollywood Fashion Secrets makes a product called a Hip Hugger. It’s a small elastic piece with clips on either end that hooks onto the back belt loops for a smoother fit.

There are also Pant Clips, which are basically decorative clips that gather a small amount of excess fabric at the waistband.

The hip hugger is better when you have more excess fabric. Pant clips are better when you only have an inch or so.

Style Challenge: Figure Out Why Your Pants Gap at the Waist

Ready for this week’s style challenge?

Grab a pair of pants from your closet that gaps at the waist and figure out why.

  • Does the waist hit you too low?
  • Does the fabric lack stretch?
  • Is the material too thick and rigid?
  • Or is the waist simply too big for your actual measurements?

Because once you understand the problem, the solution gets a whole lot easier.

Next Week on Inside Petite Style

Next week, we’re talking about petite proportions.

Without question, proportion is one of the biggest aha moments clients have. Once that clicks, it changes how you look at every item in your closet and makes it much easier to put outfits together.

And that, my friend, is a wrap.

Thank you so much for hanging out, and I’ll see you back here next week.

Till then, have fun and stay stylish.

FAQs

Why do my pants fit my hips but gap at the waist?

That usually happens when there’s a bigger difference between your waist and hip measurements than the brand designed for. It’s especially common for curvy petites because many brands do not account for both curves and shorter proportions.

What rise is best for curvy petites?

Usually, a pant that hits at your natural waist works best. A rise that sits too low often creates a waist gap, while a rise that is too long for your frame can create extra fabric and an awkward fit through the crotch.

What are the best pants for curvy petites?

Wide-leg pants, barrel-leg pants, balloon pants, and joggers are often great choices because they allow room through the hips and thighs without looking sloppy or strained.

How do I fix a waist gap in pants?

A tailor may be able to improve the fit with darts or other adjustments. For a temporary fix, accessories like hip huggers or waistband clips may help depending on how much extra space you’re working with.

Are stretch fabrics better for curvy petites?

Usually, yes. Fabrics with a bit of stretch tend to feel better through the hips and thighs while still sitting more smoothly at the waist.

What should curvy petites wear with fuller pants?

That depends on body shape, but fuller pants often look best with a more tailored or balanced top so the outfit keeps shape and proportion.

What pants work for a small waist and bigger hips?

Look for pants with a defined waist, room through the hips and thighs, and ideally some stretch. Wide-leg, barrel-leg, balloon, and jogger styles are often easier to fit than slimmer, rigid cuts.

hey sunshine!

Meet Your Petite Style Coach.

Hi! I'm Angela. After 20+ years as an executive in the fashion and beauty industry, I've heard the same complaint over and over from successful Petite women: "I can't find pants that fit."

The problem isn't you. It's that most pants are designed for women who are 5'8" and taller—and the "petite" sections at most stores are an afterthought.

That's why I created the S.P.A.R.K. Style System—the ‘P’ is for pants— specifically, the Petite Pant Formula. It's the exact method I use with VIP clients (executives, business owners, leaders) to help them understand what fits their unique body and where to shop.

Here's the truth: You could spend years trying every style and brand, hoping something finally works. Or you and I can figure out your formula together in 45 minutes—and you'll know exactly what to look for from now on.

Fast. Easy. And tailored specifically to your Petite frame and professional lifestyle.
