Accessories. We know they’re important. That they pull our look together. That they elevate a pretty outfit and turn it into an amazing ensemble.
However…
According to the OSA Style Quiz responses, a whoppin’ 89% of us either don’t know where to start or never have the perfect shoes, handbag, earrings, etc. to really achieve the look we’re going for.
By the way, if you haven’t taken The Style Quiz yet, here’s a link that’ll take you there.
Well, this article will help you solve that problem. By the end, you’ll know how to accessorize every outfit in your closet. And not to spoil the surprise, but it’s way easier than you think.
Excited?
Me too!
So, let’s go.
One thing before we jump in. The goal is to have 3 signature accessories.
What’s a signature accessory?
Something you wear nearly every day.
Think Anna Wintour’s sunglasses, Audrey Hepburn’s ballet flats, Dr. Brix’s scarves.
Why is 3 the magic number?
Always having the perfect shoes is great, but layering in #2 & #3 – when they make sense – elevates your look to a whole new awesome level.
‘Cause a picture is worth a billion words, here’s an example scenario we’re going to use. (It’s also in the free worksheet that came in the weekly newsletter.) You didn’t receive an email? No worries sunshine! Enter your info here and I’ll pop it over to you pronto tonto.
Step 1: Accentuate Your Best Features
If you already have a favorite accessory in mind – awesome! You can skip on ahead to Step #2.
If you need some inspiration, hang out here with me for a bit.
Yes! Accessories pull your outfit together and transform a nice dress, skirt, or whatever into an amazing outfit that you love to wear and makes you feel great.
Ideally, though, they also emphasize and bring attention to your very best most favorite features.
Take a look at the list of favorite features on page 3 of the worksheet. There’s also a couple of suggested accessories that’ll emphasize that feature most.
I know we mentioned the goal is to pick one Ride or Die signature, but check as many features as apply. (It’ll come in handy later.)
Step 2: Your Lifestyle Matters (A Bunch)
Okay, so you have a list of potential signature accessories, but which makes the most sense given your lifestyle – both work and play?
For example, say you’re on the phone all day. You discuss sensitive information so putting every call on speaker isn’t an option. Chandelier earrings are awesome but may get in the way and end up annoying you.
Or you love high heels but start your day at 6am and don’t stop running around until 6pm. An awesome signature that doesn’t include you hobbling home every night with miserable, scrunched toes.
You see where we’re going with this.
Give it a think until you narrow your many options down to one signature. One accessory that you’ll love wearing 90% of the time without having to fiddle and while being 100% comfortable.
Don’t be sad about the other ones you love but didn’t choose, we’re going to revisit them in a bit.
Step #3 – What You Have
This is a quick one.
If you chose Unique Heels (like in our example) as your signature and your closet resembles a Nordstrom shoe department – congrats. Skip to Step #5.
Step #4 – What You Need
If you don’t feel your current assortment is sufficient, start making a list of items to add.
The easiest way to start is by visiting your closet.
Take a look at your clothes and make sure you have a signature to go with each.
Going back to the shoe example – Say you have a fantastic red dress but you’ve never worn it. (Or you have but feel like something is missing.) What do you need? Leopard pumps, nude kitten heels, black stilettos?
Jot it down.
Not sure what you need?
No worries!
There are a couple of options:
- Pinterest – Create a board for your signature accessory and start adding inspirational styles. Before you know it Pinterest will be sending you daily updates on styles similar to what you selected, ‘cause they’re super smart like that.
- Or if you want more personalized advice, you can always book a quick 10-Minute Zoom call with me and we can create your list together.
Caution Tape:
There’s no rush. Just because you have a list, don’t feel obligated to search out all the items this instant. I know it’s tempting, but you’ll be so much happier in the end if you’re super picky. The worst thing ever is to have a bunch of stuff that you feel ‘meh’ about. Hold out for items that you’re super excited to wear.
Step #5 – Your Second Signature Accessory
Now, onto your second signature. Let’s re-visit Step #2. Is there something on that list that may not work every day, but would be perfect a few days a week? Awesome. Consider that for your second signature.
If not, revisit Step #1 OR my favorite resource, you guessed it Pinterest. Type Accessories in the search bar and instantly all sorts of options pop-up. Take a moment to look around and find something you truly love.
Step #6 – Your Third & Final Signature Accessory
Keep going, girl! Nothing can stop you now.
Are you ready to move on?
Or…
If you want to pause here and revisit your third signature after you have a great selection of your 1st and 2nd choices? Great. Do it.
Once you have all three signatures decided upon and lists made of what you need, you are well on your way.
You may not have three accessories that fit everything in your closet, but you do know what to look for when shopping and you’ll start to see what each outfit in your closet needs to morph it into amazing.
Put A Bow On It:
Was that easy or what?
Here’s a quick recap of how to accessorize every outfit in your closet.
- Determine your first signature accessory
- Make Sure It Fits Your Lifestyle
- Make A List Of What You Need – Start Basic. You can get bolder & more colorful as time goes on
- When you’re ready, move on and pick your second & third signature.
If you have questions or need some additional suggestions, don’t hesitate to leave a message in the comments below. I’m happy to help.
