A couple of weeks ago I was surfing Anthropologie for new hair accessories (because I haven’t had a haircut since March) and landed on the handbag page. Don’t ask. I clearly got distracted.
Anyways, while there I noticed they were selling handbag straps. And not just one, but like 30 different ones.
And I thought, oh! What a cute idea. Buy a new purse and customize it any way you want. So, I did a little research and realized I’ve apparently been living under a boulder (or quarantined) for the last few months. Because swapping-out your handbag straps is a huge trend right now.
Why A New Strap(s) Is Such A Clever Idea:
You don’t have to buy a new handbag. You can actually give the handbag you love a face-lift or bag-lift as the case may be.
What I love is that it is soooo much easier to clip on a new strap than it is to actually transfer all your stuff from one handbag to another.
The other thing that elevates this to brilliant? A new strap literally turns your favorite handbag into the most versatile handbag on the planet and suddenly the perfect accessory for everything in your closet.
It can be super casual, dressy, funky, boho, super colorful, and on and on.

What’s The Perfect Length:
There are tons of different sites where you can find new straps. But before we dive into that, let’s talk length and how to determine the perfect size for you.
Short Strap (Perfect for hanging off your forearm) – 12-20 inches
Shoulder Strap – 30+ inches
Shoulder Strap For Statuesque Girls (or if you simply like your bag to hit closer to hip length) – 40+ inches
Crossbody Strap – 50+ inches
And Width:
Something else to keep in mind is width. Wide straps are beyond popular right now. But trendiness aside, if your favorite bag is big or you have a tendency to put carry everything you own wider straps are way more comfortable.
Now, let’s get to the fun part.
Anthropologie:
This is the page that started this mini-obsession. And while Anthropologie usually leans towards a more boho vibe, this twisted leather number will work no matter what your personal style.
If you want to see everything Anthropologie has to offer, here is the link.
Madewell:
There are two awesome things about Madewell’s selection. They have all the classic styles you’d expect – like this braided leather offering. I included the model shot so you could see how thick this strap is – making it perfect for larger bags and totes.
The second cool thing… they collaborated with Salt and have a bunch of exclusive, limited-edition styles that combine Salt’s ethically sourced, fair trade values and Madewell’s easy-breezy vibe.
This one is just for fun. The thin width makes it terrific for a tiny crossbody. And I can see you loving the casual style for strolling around a flea market or farmers market.

Kate Spade:
While they don’t have as many options as some of the other brands listed, the ones they do have are fabulous! I mean, who doesn’t love pink fur?
And here is a link to see all of Kate Spade’s choices.
This metal chain comes in several different finishes. This little number is ideal if Your Guide To Style words are classic, preppy, or timeless.

Cthru Purses:
You might remember when we could go to sporting events? Yeah. Me too.
Well, this brand originally started back when transparent bags were the only ones we were allowed to bring to the stadium.
If you want to start from scratch, you can pick the bag style and then choose your strap. However, they do sell the straps separately and have approximately a bazillion different options.
Coach (Honorable Mention):
While researching, I ran into this cute one from Coach. They have a few other choices, but compared to everything else we’ve seen, the others are sort of ho-hum.
Put A Bow On It:
So that’s a wrap, Sunshine!
Straps are a fun way to turn your favorite handbag into the most versatile bag on the planet. Not to mention, affordable, customizable, and a cool way to make your bag one-of-a-kind. Just like you.
