The weather is cooling down, but handbag trends are definitely heating up. In fact, I would go so far as to say, designers have out-done themselves when it comes to giving us fun, fresh, options. Here are nine of the best (in a variety of prices) and of course, some tips thrown-in to help you decide which one is awesome for you.

Okay! Enough chitter-chatter, let’s get to the good stuff.

Handbag Trend #1 – Glorious Geometrics

Circles, squares, and… trapezoids?!? There is a shape for every taste.

This trend is perfection if your style is classic and refined. The structured shape works beautifully with the clean lines of your clothes and will reinforce your sophisticated image. Try an unexpected color to add a hint of fun.

Pro Tip – Make sure the size will work for everything you need to carry. The structured shape means there’s no wiggle room if extra essentials pop up that you need to schlep along.

Handbag Trend #2 – Modern Metallics

I love this trend! Silver and gold are as versatile and black or cognac, but with a more creative, adventurous feel.

Pro Tip – This style is one of my all-time favorites. However, a word of warning. It is way way heavier than it looks. Stella wasn’t messing around when it came to the chain embellishment.

Handbag Trend #3 – Charming Chains

We’ve chatted about chains a bunch this year; Chain Link Jewelry and Summer Shoe Embellishment. The trend continues going strong this season but has migrated (in a big way) to handbags. What’s fabulous is there are big chunky chains, thinner more refined chains, and chains strictly as decoration. So, if you’re a fan too, you have a ton of choices!

Pro Tip – If you’re on-line shopping, check ‘the details’ tab and check how heavy the handbag is. Chains are great, but they can also add weight which will wear your poor shoulder down if it’s going to be your everyday option.

Handbag Trend #4 – Cute Crossbody

Crossbodies have been around for eons. So you’re probably rolling your eyes and thinking what the heck makes this fresh. Well, this season the size has shrunk to micro. Meaning they’re really a small wallet with a strap. I love a crossbody for running errands, to travel, outdoor events (whenever those return), or to carry along with a work tote. Handbag Trend #5 – Playful Puffer

I know! We talked about Puffer Purses a couple of seasons ago in the Marc Jacobs Pillow Purse review. Well, the trend is growing even bigger with more designers jumping on the wagon.

Pro Tip – Watch where the strap hits you. Because of the width inherent in puffers, they can add unwanted volume to an area you don’t want. If that’s the case, play with the strap length or wear it on your arm or fall in love with a different bag.

Handbag Trend #6 – Clever Clutch

Clutch bags are super chic, and this season they are oh-so practical. No longer brought out a couple times a year for the random cocktail party and only large enough for a credit card and lipstick. No. No. No. These are roomy and oversized, and dare I say delightfully slouchy and unstructured? (In the best way possible.)

Pro Tip – From a practical standpoint, these are best if it’s the only bag you need to carry. Meaning an over-sized clutch and a work tote can easily turn into a hassle. Especially if you’re petite.

Handbag Trend #7 – Quirky Quilts

This is one of the most versatile Fall/Winter trends. No matter if your style is creative or conservative, there is a bag that’ll fit.

Pro Tip – If the quilting feature is something you love and want to really emphasize, consider a color other than black. Lighter, brighter shades do a beautiful job of showing off the detailed stitching.

Handbag Trend #8 – Tempting Texture

This may be my favorite trend. I adore every style featured. (Oh! That weeping you hear in the background is my credit card.) Texture this season means everything from fur to feathers, to unique fabrics. And here’s one of each for you to ponder.

Here’s another instance where you’ll want to check ‘the details’. This KG Tweed number is much larger in real life than you’d expect.

Pro Tip – If your aesthetic is creative and you’re cringing at the idea of tweed. Or you’re conservative and wincing at the idea of feathers – Don’t! The juxtaposition of funky & traditional will add an unexpected sense of humor and drama to your look. Which is all good. And super stylish.

Handbag Trend #9 – Woven Whimsey

This is another super versatile trend that goes from casual totes to refined luxury. The best feature of this trend may be the durability. The woven texture hides wear and nicks making it a smart multi-season investment.
